In order to have a good understanding of student learning teachers need to give summative assessments. Summative assessments are used at the end of unit or learning to show what the students have learned over a period of time. These assessments typically are more project based and should be accompanied with a rubric to set the expectations for the students (Hanna & Dettmer, 2004). Summative assessments can come in a variety of formats but one common one is using WIKIS. A Wiki is a web-based tool that students can use to create a web site. This web site can be used to show an overall understanding of a concept or unit (Perera-Diltz & Moe, 2014). Wiki is a free online tool that students can use as an individual or in a group to collaborate. This tool does not produce data on the information inputted rather; the teacher would assess the work using a rubric. This tool allows for various forms or creativity. Using this form of summative assessment would allow the teacher to have a complete understanding of each student’s knowledge of the subject. Knowing all students’ levels the teacher could determine the next steps for them while moving forward in the learning.
